Five Spice Gin
By The Salopian Inn - South Australia
It's a very surreal thing when one of the most famed venues in Australia, a certified mecca of Gin - The Salopian Inn contacts you to make them a small batch that'll don their own name. We were incredibly giddy at the notion that Karen Armstrong (Owner & Chef) and Alex Marchetti (Sommelier) would be making the trip to our distillery to discuss what flavours they had in mind! It was only a handful of years ago that we were at their fine establishment enjoying their vast Gin selection and seasonal menu inspired by an array of Asian flavours - and soon became impassioned with the botanical beverage!
Five Spice is a hallmark of many Asian and Arabic inspired dishes, a common theme at the Salopian Inn - and what better way than to match the intensity of the flavours that come from the kitchen with a Gin of equal power.
We used a generous amount of Cinnamon, Star Anise, Fennel Seed, Szechaun Pepper and Cloves - then turned to some warmer, sweeter citrus - mandarin peel and some backing notes of Almonds, Orris & Ginger Root - and did we mention a double-dose of Juniper?
A spice-driven Gin of intensity, power and presence.
